How to Find Out?
Step 1: Six Questions to ask your Insurance Provider
1. Could you walk me through what mental health services are included in my plan?​
2. Do I need a referral or prior authorization before starting with a therapist?​
3. Can you help me understand my deductible and where I currently stand with it?​
4. Will I have out-of-pocket costs for sessions before my deductible is met?​
5. Does my deductible apply to both in-network and out-of-network providers?​
6. What is the best way to check if a therapist I am interested in is in-network?
Step 2: Understanding your Deductible
​​A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance begins to share in the cost of care. This can vary widely. Some plans have higher deductibles, while others are much lower.​

For mental health services, you may be responsible for the full session cost until that deductible is met, even when seeing an in-network provider.​
​
To stay informed and avoid surprises, it can be helpful to ask: “What will my out-of-pocket cost be before my insurance begins covering mental health services?”
Step 3: Out of Pocket Options
If we do not carry your insurance, self-pay is always an option. At Balance and Peace Family Counseling we accept cash, major credit cards, and HSA/FSA cards.

As an out-of-network provider, we ask that payment be made at the time of service. We’re happy to provide a Superbill, an itemized receipt with diagnosis and procedure codes that you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.

Reimbursement varies by plan (deductible, allowed amounts, coinsurance, visit limits), so you may receive partial or full reimbursement depending on your benefits. You are responsible for any unpaid balance after your insurer processes the claim. If you’d like, we can help you understand your Superbill or suggest questions to ask your insurer before your first visit.
